Customer Reviews - Evo SMD Pro Solar Security Light
This is the second 700 lumens solar I have bought, this time for a neighbour. The first I have had for over a year and have had no problems to date. I chose this one because it has a separate motion detector with horizontal and vertical mechanical adjustment as well as the usual 'time on', 'sensitivity', and 'lux' (operation according to ambient light) adjustments. You do need the ability to mechanically adjust the operating position of the detector if you have a specific area from where you want to trigger the light to come on. The light output is also sufficient to illuminate a reasonable distance. Easy to install and set up. Four self-tapping screws are used to attach the two angled metal brackets to the solar panel and ensure that you use a correct, snugly fitting screwdriver to screw these in as you do need to use a certain amount of force for the screws to bite into the metal.

3 | 1 The Evo SMD security light is excellent as it provides a large solar panel that can be mounted in a sunny area with plenty of cable to connect the panel and the lioght unit so that thye light can be sighted in the area reuiored whilst giving maximum charging. Once again, very easy to fix and the sensor can be set to exactly as you need along with the multiple settings on the length of time that you need the light to be on, finally, and possibly most important, the light is very bright and illuminates the side passage where it is used to "daylight quality"

They have all become unreliable within 2-3 years due to faults in the sensor. Condensation in the sensor has been an issue, although the SMD Pro Solar is an improvement. Customer Service has been excellent, and have replaced two of the lights under guarantee.

2 | 0 This was almost the only solar floodlight I could find with a decent light output (700 lumens) that had a motion detector with total horizontal and vertical mechanical adjustment as well as the usual 'time on', 'sensitivity', and 'lux' (operation according to ambient light) adjustments. From previous experience I've found you do need the ability to mechanically adjust the operating position of the detector if you have a very specific area from where you want to trigger the light to reliably come on. There are two angled metal brackets that that are fixed to the solar panel using self tapping screws into pre-drilled pilot holes. Whilst the brackets are not particularly thick they do securely support the panel. Before I screwed the brackets onto the panel I slightly enlarged the bracket holes that are used for fixing to a wall. The reason I did this was to give myself a little levelling adjustment if my wall drilled plugged holes wandered slightly from their marked positions. The brackets angle the solar panel at apx 45 degrees to the sky. In this instance the light was going on a south facing wall, which is really the most reliable option for solar powering especially during British winter times. The Solar panel comes with a fixed 5 metre cable that screw locks into a connector on a short cable coming from the light casing. Looking at the FAQ it looks like the Solar Centre can supply 5 metre extension cables if the light itself needs to be away from a south facing wall. The light is rated to the IP56 standard that should give decent protection against rain water ingress. The light bracket has two oval shaped slots for securing it to a wall allowing you a bit of final levelling adjustment. The easiest option for fitting the bracket is to first remove it from the light housing by undoing the two holding bolts. Take care not to loose the two washers with each bolt, one of them is a spring washer on the inner side of the bracket that goes against the bolt threaded socket on the light. The light housing seems pretty well constructed with weather protection to prevent water getting inside the unit. On its base is a water protected toggle on-off switch. Once you have everything fixed and plugged together, leave this switch off for 3 or 4 days for the battery inside the light to fully charge up. Currently the rechargeable battery is not replaceable. It's always difficult to assess how long a life any rechargeable will have, but given recent improvements in battery technology hopefully this one might last for at least 3 or 4 years - if not longer. To adjust the area for when light comes on, I found the following procedure worked best for me. Just before it got dark I set the three adjustable controls to 'shortest time on', 'maximum sensitivity' and the 'lux' to daylight setting. I then angled the motion detector until the light lit when I walked in the required area. Because getting this right can take several attempts, that's why I initially set the it to shortest 'time on' to avoid having to wait too long before each test walk. There is a plastic locking knob that you undo to angle the motion detector up or down. You can also turn it from side to side independently of this knob, but this adjustment is fairly stiff probably to prevent accidental movement. As it got dark I altered the 'lux' sensitivity control until the light only came on for the level of darkness at which I wanted it to light. I then reset the 'time on' control so that the light stayed on for around 1 minute. Checking it over the next couple of days I found that it was pretty consistent in terms of the level of darkness when it lit. Very roughly speaking 700 lumens is the equivalent of an old 60 watt light bulb, but subjectively being 'cold white' it looks brighter than that to me. There is also a 1400 lumens version of this solar floodlight available which would be closer to 100 watts. At the moment I'm going to rate it 4 out of 5, purely because I only installed it a few weeks ago and I'm in no position to judge its longer term reliability yet - but so far it's all good news.

This up grade has a good powerful light not only for security for my garage but gives me temporary light if I need access in the pitch black. Easy to set up. Tools: an adjustable spanner for the small bracket nuts, screw driver to in stall brackets to solar panel and to (in my case) wooden surface.

Although the initial feeling is that they are not quite bright enough, you soon get used to it and in fact they are well up to the job. My only criticism would be that there is no adjustment on the solar panel to get the best angle - preferred the earlier design with the panel on a swivel head. - Still a good system though.

1 | 0 I installed this light last weekend. The delivery was fast and the installation was straightforward. The screw heads were too small for the bracket but a washer on each sorted that out. It's been mostly cloudy December days but the light has charge left in the morning. Using this for a front door/driveway light. A good level of brightness for this purpose, easily bright enough to light the drive but not so bright that it dazzles me when I pull up.

0 | 0 Purchased these lights to illuminate a70 metre pathway and flight of steps, have used 4 units. They do the task absolutely fine , replacing 8 electric lamps. Have purchased another 3 units to illuminate other areas of the garden , still to install them. Installation of lamps very easy. Only had one problem,one of the lamps not as bright as others , tried alternative lamp with the solar panel and that worked fine. Rang Suzie at Solar Centre she arranged to send replacement. As with delivery of the units this was delivered in two days. Wonderful customer service support. Supply of items and product design excellent. Have now to watch how long units perform.

Enough cable to install perfect in position for panel and light. The motion sensor works a treat, and the light is better than expected, very pleased. Only been in position and switched on for a few days, time will tell how resistive it is to Scottish weather, but all good so far. Will buy again.

It switched itself off after 3 minutes then performed as per settings. Delighted with light levels across rural (i.e. VERY dark) patio.

However I decided to try the EVOSmD version and I was so pleased with my purchase. Much brighter then I expected for a solar light and well made.. I was so impressed I bought the brighter EVOSMD pro version for my actual entrance and may even buy another one for the rear of my house. Time will tell how long they last but my initial thoughts are very good value and perfect for the job.

Installation was easy, the only connection being by a plug from the solar panel. the set up of the sensitivity and lux controls were simple with easy to follow from the installation guide. These lamps were fitted as part of a security installation, they give a usefull area of light from 8 ft above the path. I would purchase these again, and would recommend the Solarcentre as source

Hope this one is as good..the quality doesn't seem the same as the first.. The solar panel was 'squew whiff' in its frame and looked inferior to previous one.. Although It works good at the mo...time will tell.. But overall..I'm happy with the lights.

Was producing good, strong, light reaching right down the back garden from the first evening and has been going strong since. Only a week or so but the signs are good. Well impressed and really pleased with the result. Our cat, Saffi, was a bit puzzled at first but soon got used to it and I can now see her in the dark (she is pure black).

0 | 0 Although it is very expensive , it really is a good bright light - the beast solar light I have ever bought. The only improvement would be if the solar panel had a swivel movement so you could turn it towards the sun. The only place I could hang mine was on the side wall of the house which is quite shady and I couldn't angle the panel towards the sky away from neighbouring walls. Having said that it seems to be charging fine as it throws out a good strong light. Highly recommended.

The light was easy to instal and provides good illumination for a double bay garage. My only criticism is that the plastic nut which screws the lead into the light was misshapen and I had to remove it. As the light's under cover this isn't a problem. Would definitely buy other products from Solarcentre.

1 | 0 This is much more expensive than previous solar lights I have bought, but it is much better than any I have had before. I have only had it installed for a week, so I will need to wait to see how it fares over a longer time. First impressions though are very positive. The light is very bright for solar, and the service was great. Highly recommended.

2 | 0 I bought a less powerful version of this light about 2 years ago and it has been excellent so far, so I decided to purchase this version a few months ago. The version in this review has proved to be even better as it has a brighter LED bulb. It was easy to install and to set up or adjust. It has worked really well through winter, always having enough charge to give a really bright light as good as any mains floodlight. This is despite the solar panel being located in an area of my garden that is shaded much of the time by neighbouring buildings. I'm so pleased with it that I've just bought 2 more of this more powerful version for use in other parts of my garden.

Delivery was excellent and so all in all , a very satisfying purchase unlike cheaper lights from another company which have proven to be quite useless and a total waste of money---you get what you pay for!

I must add that there was a minor issue with a previous light which only took one phone call and the issue was resolved immediately with a new PIR sent out the same day. 1 | 0 A very robust product - solar panel is built to last and the light is a solid extremely bright device. A minor gripe was that the fixing bracket holes didn't quite line-up with the solar panel pre-drilled holes - a bit fiddly to get around but not a big deal.

0 | 0 Excellent security light that is as bright as a mains unit. Its only been installed for 4 days, most of which have been cloudy and dull however it still works every evening and is very bright. Does a good job of lighting 40m squared garden that backs onto rural land with no other light source at night time. Could do with an extension cable so the light can be positioned more centrally on the back of the house as the solar panel is located on south facing garden wall, however reading the FAQ's show an extension lead is due in stock before Christmas.

0 | 0 The sensor does not swivel so it is fixed in the direction of the light. In my situation with a 300' garden terraced down a cliff, it would be more convenient if the PIR sensor was adjustable in direction. With a South facing garden I get an impressive amount of light generated by the solar panel.

Thanks for taking the time to post a review. You should be able to swivel the PIR. Can you double check you've got the dials on the PIR facing the ground and then you should find you have a good range of motion to get it detecting exactly as you need it. Please get in touch if you're still having any problems.

1 | 0 Got the EvoSMD last year which has been great for lighting my drive but needed something bigger for the back garden so I got this Pro version which is much brighter. The light is the same size as the standard EvoSMD but there are 12 SMDs instead of the 6 and the the panel is bigger. I have been really happy with the standard EvoSMD but the Pro is in a different league in terms of brightness.
